FIFTHBEAM is a small studio that builds software products and documentation systems. We have shipped SaaS products, built technical documentation infrastructure for engineering teams, and worked across the full stack from initial architecture through production deployment.
AI tools became a real part of that work — not an experiment. When we integrated them into actual shipping projects, we ran into the same structural problems everyone runs into: context that drifts across sessions, architecture decisions that needed verification but rarely got it, output that looked correct until the project was far enough along to reveal that it wasn’t.
Why this guide exists
AI development advice divides into two categories. Hype: claims about autonomous agents and 10x productivity that describe a future state and tell you nothing about how to work today. Tricks: prompt templates and clever phrasings that stop working after a few sessions and do nothing for the session after that.
Neither addresses the structural problem. AI-assisted development needs the same kind of discipline that software development already applies to version control, testing, and code review. Nobody treats those as optional on a real project. AI context management gets treated as optional, and the costs compound quietly until they do not.
We built an operational method to address this in our own work. The guide is that method, written out.
What this is not
